We didn’t always start as Covenanters Christian Church. Covenanters started as a youth movement in the United Kingdom under Youth For Christ. In 1955 a young couple working with Covenanters UK, Paul and Eileen Revell, moved to Zimbabwe (then Southern Rhodesia). They started youth services during the week in the Mabelreign suburb with Sunday church services being attended at Bethany Chapel in Harare Central. In 1982 all the meetings got shifted to Mabelreign with the youth also meeting there on Sunday evening.

The year 2001 saw the Revells moving back to the UK due to serious illness. With some of the youth now grown up, a Fellowship was formally established, Elders appointed, and the name Covenanters Christian Fellowship adopted. Chris Munzvandi led as the first Head Elder. In 2002 Sunday services were moved to now meet in the morning. In 2008 Chris and his wife Joyce relocated to the United States and Brian Mudzikitiri took his place as Head Elder.

2016 was a watershed year as the home Fellowship celebrated 50 years of Christian ministry particularly to the youth. Numbers had gradually declined since 2008 mostly because of the harsh economic climate that saw many people leaving the country. A new vision was agreed upon by the leadership that included moving from being a house fellowship, finding a full time pastor, more intentional reaching out for the gospel, pastoral and biblical training for the church leadership, and acquisition of a mini bus to transport the youth to fellowship.

God answered our prayers by opening the door for Pastor Thomas Hodzi to join the fellowship in March 2017. He had been serving at Central Baptist Church and lecturing at Harare Theological College. Joseph Magwaku, who had been serving as one of the Elders since 2002 also become one of the pastors. Several changes were made including moving from being a house fellowship to starting to meet at Harare Theological College, changing the name to Covenanters Christian Church, formally having a Church Costitution, and having formal membership. By God’s grace the church steadily began to grow. God was also kind to provide an invaluable addition to the church as John Bell joined the pastoral team in January 2018. He brought with him the wealth of over 30 years of pastoral ministry experience. That same year also saw Covenanters Christian Church move from meeting at Harare Theological College to our current location, 10 Dorset Road, Avondale. This venue has been ideal for the increase in the numbers the Lord has blessed us with.

We see God as having given us a renewed vision and passion for the gospel, for Christ, and for reaching Zimbabwe in particular with God-centered worship and biblical teaching. We are thankful for the history we have and the men and women God has used in the past. We are also excited about the future God has for the church as we seek to have Christ honored in us and in those around us.
